Obesity levels have been increasing rapidly worldwide for the past two decades. The World Health Organisation has labelled it a global epidemic. The WHO has estimated the UK to be among the most overweight countries in the world, and according to government figures, the UK is now the fattest country in Europe.
Dr Jonty Heaversedge said: “It is incredibly important that parents ensure their children are active to reduce child obesity rates in Southwark. There has been a significant increase in health problems in children that are normally only seen in adults such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Summer holiday is the perfect opportunity to plan something fun to do with your family outside to get active.”
