A&E won’t kiss it better over the festive break

In the run up to the festive period NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group is reminding local people that A&E is for serious emergencies only.

A&E departments are very busy places all year round. Every day doctors and nurses who specialise in life-threatening illness and injury spend their time dealing with people who have coughs, back ache, diarrhoea and other minor illnesses.  Many people forget that A&E is for emergencies only.

NHS Southwark CCG is encouraging people in Southwark not to use A&E as their first port of call if they become unwell over Christmas and New Year. There are plenty of alternatives where you can get expert advice and treatment, including local pharmacies, your GP and the GP out-of-hours service.

  • For minor injuries and illnesses, you can look after yourself with a well-stocked medicine cupboard and first aid materials

  • If you are feeling under the weather and you are not getting better, get early advice.  Minor illnesses can get worse quickly – especially if you are over 60. Visit your local pharmacist for quick and easy access to health advice and recommended treatments for winter illnesses. If they are concerned about your condition, they will advise you to see your GP.

  • Some pharmacies are open over the festive period – you can check which ones and opening hours at www.southwarkccg.nhs.uk. Your local pharmacist can supply medicines for selected minor ailments and emergency contraception without a GP prescription.

  • Please order and collect your repeat prescriptions in good time to avoid running out of medicine over Christmas and the New Year holidays.  If you run out of medicine, speak to a local pharmacist.  They may be able to provide an emergency supply of a small quantity of your usual prescription medicine.  Please note that this is at the pharmacist's discretion and some exclusions and charges may apply.

  • Your GP is your first port of call for on-going illnesses or injuries. Check with your surgery for their opening times over the festive period and make an appointment in good time if you need to see your GP.

  •  You can still speak to a GP when your practice is closed; the GP out-of-hours service in Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham is available through the night from 6.30pm to 8am even over Christmas. It's easy to use – just phone 020 8693 9066. If you can't remember the number, call your GP surgery and you'll be redirected

  • Please only call 999 or visit A&E if you have a very serious/life threatening illness or injury
