Dr Know – keeping well over Christmas

Many of us are preparing for Christmas – making lists, going shopping and organising festivities. However, it is also important to prepare, and look after your health this holiday season.

We want to ensure you know the right service to use over the Christmas break, and in Southwark, there are many services to help you get the right care, at the right time, first time.

The best place to start for health care advice or remedies is a local pharmacy. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians don't just dispense prescriptions: they are qualified health professionals who can assess symptoms, provide guidance and reassurance, and recommend over-the-counter medication.

Pharmacies will be open over the holidays, and details of various opening times will be available, closer to the time on our CCG website.

If you need urgent, same-day advice or help but you can't see your GP, please call NHS 111 for free, 24/7. The 111 service has GPs, nurses, paramedics, and pharmacists giving urgent advice over the phone – so you can get the advice you need or a same-day appointment closer to home without having to wait for hours in A&E.

If you take prescribed medication regularly, make sure you have enough supplies and get requests for repeat prescriptions into your GP as soon as possible. Requesting online is easy and you can ask for your prescription to go straight to your pharmacist – making it even easier to collect.

Finally, wishing all Southwark residents and patients a happy and healthy festive time!
